London’s Underground Tunnels bring out the Rockstar’s of Geospatial Survey

31.07.2024

Storm were approached by industry partner Geoterra Limited to complete a complex multifaceted survey of a 880 metre long underground canal, a challenge that required Storm’s most experienced geospatial surveyors.

The Islington Tunnel is an asset owned by the Canal & River Trust (CRT), they required a georeferenced 3D model of the tunnel. This challenge was to bring some of the UK’s leading geospatial specialists to work in collaboration. Storm were approached by industry partner Geoterra Limited to contribute bathymetric survey expertise. It became evident quickly that this was to be a project that would break new ground in survey methodology. The case study certainly makes for interesting reading!

Also in July Storm Surveyors visited the River Wandle in Southwest London to conduct a full river condition assessment (RCA) on a 260m stretch of the watercourse. To achieve a full picture of the site, a topographic survey was also commissioned. When combined this data provides a vast quantity of highly precise information that can be used for the efficient delivery of projects for our clients. Storm’s trained RCA surveyors are also experienced in providing topographical survey data, however some site specific challenges needed to be overcome, you can find out more in the case study.

The UK went to the polls in early July voting in a new governing party, this certainly kick started enquiries for Storm’s services with order books starting to fill up from new and existing clients choosing to directly appoint Storm on survey projects. Savvy clients are realising the gains of Storm’s expert skills to produce hyper intelligent data. Storm de-risk unsuccessful outcomes on projects because of the niche skills their surveyors hold. This in turn, ensures a complete data set is delivered. A result echoed in a survey carried out on a local project close to Storm HQ on the River Stour. Storm’s client commented “From the initial discussions to receiving the final deliverables, Storm provided us with an excellent service.”

Exciting developments continue with River Digital Twin® (RDT) data, enabling interested parties to view a full 3D interactive model of their project. Storm offer project specific 30 minute demonstrations of the RDT approach. Why not take time to explore? Mike Hopkins can explain. Contact him on 01608 664910.

So to the annual cricket match and the eagerly anticipated result. This year Storm came a credible second with some stand out performances from Will Shanks and Tom Isaac with the bat. Sadly Storm’s middle order collapsed and the opposing team Ilmington CC took advantage for a well deserved victory. The challenge is set for a rematch in 2025!

In early July storm delivered another collaborative webinar with Gavia Environmental Ltd on the subject of Biodiversity Net Gain – How Ecologists & Geospatial Surveyors Maximise Land Potential. It was exciting to host a truly global audience on this important subject. Do not fear if you missed the webinar and are keen to learn more, a recording is available here.

As late summer approaches Storm have a full order book and will be traversing the UK on a huge variety of projects, please do check back next month for an update on their adventures.
