While much of the UK wondered if August would set a new record for dryness, and farmers did the rain dance, Storm Geomatics surveyors took advantage of low river levels and early foliage die back to accelerate key projects.
One of the biggest successes has been on the River Nene, where Senior Surveyor Tom Atkinson and his team have kept the project moving at pace. By the end of August, they had already completed 955 main cross sections – despite access delays caused by an unexpected police cordon. Undeterred, the team pressed on, adding side channel reaches and bringing the total surveyed to an impressive 1,750 sections. All data is being processed through GeoRiver®, Storm’s own powerful software, keeping delivery firmly on track.
Beyond large scale river projects, Surveyor James Mayers completed a River Condition Assessment (RCA) for an ecological client to ensure Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) is achieved at a site allocated for planned housing development. The channel displayed some great positive indicators such as fallen trees, leaning trees and large wood. Although these features did make access particular challenging, Storm Geomatics have a lot of experience in accessing hard to reach channels for geospatial surveys.
Using high-accuracy GNSS equipment, James was able to collect reliable data where traditional methods would have struggled. After detailed scenario testing, the site maintained its “Good” classification, meaning any biodiversity uplift will need to be achieved offsite. This project is a great example of the geospatial and environmental sectors working hand-in-hand to deliver BNG goals.
Storm Geomatics held their summer colleague event in August splitting the day into part company strategy and part golf lessons & competition for those more experienced. It was a day of two halves where three simple questions were asked.
- What helps you do your best work?
- What gets in the way?
- If you were CEO for a day, what would you change?
Clear themes emerged: strong support, reliable equipment, and strong communication make the difference to delivering great work. And if they were CEO for a day? Suggestions were varied, but the heart of them all was about making work smoother, fairer, and more human. The day ended with a BBQ watching those experienced golfers play their final putts!
Finally, Mike Hopkins showcased the River Digital Twin® (RDT®) to a group of hydraulic engineers who thought their eyes were deceiving them when Mike demonstrated the progress of the real time RDT. One engineer commented:
“That press of a button currently takes us two weeks to build with that level of accuracy.”
