How To Keep Survey Projects Moving During a Record-Breaking Summer

From extreme temperatures and carbon reduction milestones to major reservoir and river infrastructure projects, July proved that Storm Geomatics continues to deliver when conditions are at their toughest.

During one of the hottest periods of 2026, Storm Geomatics maintained full survey capacity across the UK, supporting major infrastructure, water, and environmental projects despite temperatures exceeding 30°C. The month highlighted not only the resilience of the surveying teams but also its continued commitment to sustainability, innovation, and investment in future talent.

Surveying Through Extreme Summer Conditions

July’s prolonged heatwave created challenging conditions for Storm’s survey teams working across rivers, reservoirs, and remote infrastructure sites. However, Storm Geomatics’ specialist river surveyors adapted quickly by adjusting site schedules and starting work earlier in the day to minimise exposure to peak temperatures.

The company’s proactive approach, combined with extensive health and safety training, enabled projects to remain on track while protecting staff wellbeing. As climate conditions continue to evolve, Storm’s investment in training and operational resilience is proving increasingly valuable. Storm’s Carbon Reduction Strategy is Creating Measurable Outcomes

Could a growing geospatial survey company expand its operations without increasing its carbon footprint?

That was one of the key themes discussed during July when Managing Director Mike Hopkins delivered a carbon reduction supplier presentation to more than 450 employees at JBA Consulting.

The presentation demonstrated how Storm’s commitment to carbon management and ISO 14064 verification has already helped save JBA 52 tonnes of CO2e over a 12-month period, highlighting the measurable impact that sustainable operational choices can achieve.

As Storm Geomatics continues to grow, sustainability remains central to decision-making. Even with the addition of two new vehicles during July, careful fleet planning ensured that operational capability improved without increasing the company’s overall carbon footprint.

Critical Geospatial Data at Colt Crag Reservoir

When Stantec was commissioned by Northumbrian Water to undertake hydraulic modelling assessments at Colt Crag and Little Swinburn Reservoirs, they required a survey partner capable of delivering highly accurate geospatial data across a complex and environmentally sensitive landscape.

River Avon Asset Surveys Reach Major Milestone

Another significant project progressing throughout July involved comprehensive asset condition surveys across ten sites along the River Avon.

Working alongside key stakeholders including the Environment Agency, Ove Arup and Jackson Engineering, Storm Geomatics has been collecting detailed geospatial information to support the assessment of weirs, sluices and associated river infrastructure. The full case study is here.

The data gathered will help stakeholders better understand scour, undermining risks, structural condition and long-term operational effectiveness. As many of these assets approach the later stages of their operational lifecycle, accurate survey data is becoming increasingly important in supporting maintenance planning, flood risk management and navigation requirements.

Two Trainees Start Their Geospatial Journey

At the beginning of July Storm Geomatics welcomed two trainee surveyors, Matt and Miriam to the team. Their arrival reflects Storm’s ongoing commitment to developing new talent and strengthening the future of the surveying profession.
