Surveying Through the Seasons
The autumn foliage has been a sight to behold this year and Storm surveyors have enjoyed working in some truly picturesque places.
During October, two Storm Geomatics survey teams were tasked with tackling a channel cross-section job in Liswerry, Newport. The geospatial data collected will assist in updating the existing Liswerry Flood Model. The channel connects directly with the tidal River Usk via a series of tidal flapped gates and tilting weirs. Access through agricultural land parcels, power stations, and water treatment facilities was negotiated with Natural Resources Wales’ assistance. They took time to meet surveyors on site and visit certain landowners. Both survey teams utilised floating platforms to safely cross the silted channel and are on track to deliver the full set of deliverables to industry-standard specification.

Also in October, another survey team began a comprehensive river channel survey of the River Trent from Colwick to Cromwell, including all associated tributaries. This included surveying relevant flood defences, assets, and floodplain features and structures. The data will be used for future hydraulic modelling of the River Trent with the aim of improving flood risk understanding in the area.

Storm Geomatics completed the main River Trent in four areas, breaking down the site work and enabling part delivery for the client. The team targeted the completion of the more complex weirs early while river levels and weather were favourable, promoting safety and maximising data collection. Emphasis was placed on completing site work ahead of potential winter weather issues to keep the project on its critical path.

A midsummer project has grown in scope as Storm Geomatics continues to deliver vital survey support to the Environment Agency, working alongside Jacksons Civil Engineering and design partners Arup. The project focuses on baseline surveys of ageing river infrastructure along the River Avon, combining tailored above and below water techniques to inform future remedial works and long-term asset management. This comprehensive approach ensures robust decision-making and design accuracy. Storm remains committed to evolving with client needs, driving innovation and development in the face of changing landscapes.

Winter has crept in over the month of October and now with shorter daylight hours Storm need to step up their efficiency as demand for their specialist survey skills is increasing by the week. How will they ensure this is fulfilled? Check back next month to discover….
