Surveying the River Lee for Improved Ecology

The Background

Date
July 2023
Client
Atkins Global

Atkins Global a long standing client of Storm Geomatics were commissioned by Thames Water Utilities Ltd to undertake design services to help to improve sections of the River Lee between Enfield Lock and the Hackney Marshes. Including options for fish passes, modification of flow control structures and removal of non-native invasive species (NNIS).

Storm were approached to carry out several types of survey to capture data that would assist in the improvement works to benefit ecology along the identified reaches of the River Lee.

Process

The Challenge

Due to water depth and vegetation levels in the channel swath bathymetry was not an option and a 1-2m grid of levels was agreed with extra detail taken on three weirs and one sluice structure.

Through a combination of wading, float tubing and boat work Storm completed all required sections and bathymetric areas.

As an addition to survey deliverables a  remotely piloted aircraft system (RPAS) Lidar Survey was carried out to capture a full 3d model for visualisation of the project.

The survey required a degree of flexibility in it’s schedule to allow time for the survey team to renew a EUSR National Water Hygiene Course and Complete the Thames Water Passport before accessing the Lockwood Reservoir to complete areas of survey.

Project Leader Laurence Washbrook ensured close liaison with Storm’s client to ensure all the required permits, keys and authority was given by Thames Water, the Environment Agency and the Canals and Rivers Trust.

Process

The Results

This project showcased Storm’s ability to adapt to each type of survey method required to complete a full set of high quality data submitted in the client’s required format.

The team were also able to identify and locate  non-native invasive species  (NNIS)  on the site including, Giant Hogweed, Himalayan Balsam, Floating Pennywort and Signal Crayfish. this will ensure the design can now remove the NNIS swiftly and create well informed solutions for the Thames Water.

“This project showcases Storms ability to adapt to every survey and we always have the right tools and expertise to get the job done, on time and to a high standard. ”
