Our Services - Survey Control Brass bolts close up Survey control PDF diagram
Storm Geomatics recognise that survey control is the backbone of any survey. Great care is taken to provide the relevant accuracies suitable to the task in hand. Control networks can be established locally or across regions to any coordinate system. All primary control is presented on conclusive witness diagrams, or on templates at our clients request. When establishing primary control stations for a project, consideration is given to the following key criteria:

- Good sky visibility for GPS use.
- Stable ground.
- Durable monument construction.
- Easily accessible.
- Safe to use.

Our Services - Watercourses Computer software example Computer 3D elevation
Storm Geomatics core activity, providing data to client's specifications. Watercourses are generally surveyed using cross sections at regular intervals and then output as cross and long section drawings in AutoCAD. River model data is available in various formats such as Hec-Ras and ISIS. Cross section locations are presented on mapping from the Ordnance Survey, which Storm Geomatics can procure on "the same day".

Bathymetric surveys of watercourses are also undertaken, providing more detailed river bed level information. This information is used to form a 3D model of the river, and can be fully rendered to show the bed levels in different colours.

Projects undertaken range from small flood risk assessments to large catchment models. Watercourses of all characteristics can be surveyed, from small streams to ship canals.Top of page

Our Services - Stillwaters
Stillwaters of all sizes can be surveyed to provide bed topography information and volume calculations. Deeper waters can be surveyed using an echo sounder. Large areas of water can be surveyed in a day using real-time kinematic GPS in conjunction with an echo sounder. Lakes and reservoirs that are inaccessible with a normal car, can be accessed with a 4x4 or quad bike. Stillwaters are presented as contour drawings or coloured by elevation to represent any bed features. Top of page

Our Services - Scour Protection
Detailed surveys of riverbeds upstream, underneath and downstream of structures. Digital terrain models (DTMs) of the bed and structure, piers and abutments provide the engineer with the information required to assess the impact the water has on structure supports. Additionally the survey drawing can be used as a base to design scour protection works.Top of page

Our Services - Railway Surveys
Storm Geomatics surveyors all hold Personal Track Safety (PTS) certificates which allows them to work on Network Rail property. Surveyors have a good understanding of the safety procedures and parameters when working in this high risk environment. All teams are kitted out with the very best Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to help maintain high concentration levels in difficult conditions.

Surveyors can carry out full topographical surveys within Network Rail boundaries identifying and locating trackside equipment and features. Drainage surveys can be completed which provide full details of manhole chambers such as pipe sizes and levels. Cross sections through the track corridor can be measured and plotted. Whatever your survey requirements are on the railway, Storm Geomatics will deliver.Top of page

Our Services - Flood Plains Picture of flooded plain
Flood plains are surveyed in a number of ways. Lidar data and photogrammery can provide level information over vast areas of land, as aircraft are used for data capture. Storm Geomatics can provide ground control for this type of survey, ensuring consistency between air and ground based survey. Storm Geomatics can check the integrity of third party data by using real-time kinematic (RTK) GPS survey techniques, to survey parcels of land for comparison purposes. RTK techniques are also used for capturing flood plain levels using vehicle mounted GPS on a car or quad bike. This method has proved to be a cost effective alternative to aerial based surveys for smaller projects. Digital terrain models (DTM) can be created from the data captured, to provide river modellers with compatible information to work with. RTK GPS on foot can also be utilised, and is often used to produce flood plain cross sections for river modelling purposes.Top of page

Our Services - Threshold Levels Leica survey kit Garden path survey
Threshold levels of properties can be captured in a given predicted flood outline. Surveyors have years of experience explaining to property owners and tenants the reasons for threshold levelling. Properties are assessed on the critical water level entry points on an individual basis. Storm Geomatics have surveyed thousands of threshold levels across the UK and have developed a unique data capture system that organises information in the field to any client specification.Top of page

Our Services - Flash Flooding Picture of flooded road Person measuring manhole
Flash flooding occurs when heavy rain falls on saturated ground. The rain runs across the surface of the terrain and collects at the lowest points. Drainage systems take water away from low lying areas; however they may be inundated with water thus becoming ineffective. Storm Geomatics can provide accurate terrain data using RTK GPS. This technique can be used on a vehicle for fast data capture or on foot in less accessible areas, data can then be used to determine slope areas and low points. Storm Geomatics also survey drainage systems, manholes are lifted and measured to provide pipe sizes and invert levels, which is essential information when providing a flash flood analysis.Top of page

Our Services - Invasive Weeds
Invasive weeds are becoming more and more prevelant on our watercourses. Some of these weeds are not only invasive, but are also harmful to human beings. It is Storm Geomatics policy to train all site staff to identify these plants, primarily as a personal safety measure. Secondly, to notify the client of the potential dangers, and problems that arise from the growth of these plants. Invasive weeds are better identified in mid-Spring to mid-Autumn. This service is complimentary with all our survey contracts. Further information on invasive weeds can be found from our links page.Top of page

Our Services - Topographic
Storm Geomatics have a highly effective data capture solution in the Leica 1200 series GPS and TPS instruments. Large or small topographic surveys can be carried out with maximum efficiency by lending the most suitable instrument to the differing areas of the project. Data is captured using one single data collection handset between different survey techniques, allowing the surveyor to build up an overall plan of the site in real-time. Data is then downloaded into the Carlson Survey Software, where a "Field to Finish" process is undertaken. Topographic surveys can be produced at any scale, in most digital formats, or simply plotted on paper upto A0 size.Top of page
